Blues at Chartwell

Blue September is about spreading the awareness message for our men to 'Get Checked'. Prostate cancer is one of those things men don't much talk about, but it's the most common form of cancer in men, with more than 3000 diagnosed every year - and over 600 deaths.

Westfield Chartwell is stoked to be working with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of NZ to raise funds and awareness for this cause. Meet blues musician and Blue September Ambassador Darcy Perry at Westfield Chartwell on Thursday night, along with his world class band and local rising stars from Berkley Normal Middle School and Tamahere Model Country School.

Rouge is the French word for "red" and also the name of the award winning cafe on Empire Street in Cambridge, New Zealand. This September, Rogue is going blue, offering Blue September Breakfasts in support of the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

For $30 per person, enjoy any breakfast from our menu and a hot drink of your choice, plus Rouge will make a $15 donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand.

Blue September 2015

It's Blue September! Every year around 600 men die in New Zealand of prostate cancer. That is more than 600 fathers, sons, brothers, grandfathers – gone! This happens because men don’t know how dangerous the disease is, they don’t talk to their doctor about it, they simply don’t do anything about it. This has to stop. Deaths from prostate cancer can be prevented if the disease is detected early enough.

That’s why Blue September is about getting the word out about prostate cancer. If you buy a blue ribbon, paint your face blue, donate money to the Prostate Cancer Foundation or even tell people, you will be directly helping to lower the death rate and reduce the suffering from this disease.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation receives no government funding and we rely on the generosity of people to help us support men and their families who are going through the journey and spread the message for men to get regular checks.

My dad died at 55 of cancer, so I’m letting men know that they need to look after themselves. It’s about getting the message out there that it’s okay to go to the doctor. Prostate cancer kills around 600 men in New Zealand every year. Thousands more are diagnosed – many of them far too late. By going and getting a check-up from the age of 40, you are not only taking responsibility for your own health, you are also ensuring we have communities with more dads, sons, brothers and grandfathers.

If you are a man 40+ and you haven't been to the doctor for a check up, I encourage you to do so.

I am blessed to be a guest host on The Blues Room the first Wednesday of every month, usually with Nate Taiapa close by to keep everything running smooth. This episode there was heavy rain and van trouble for Nate, so I was on my own until the end of the show! No worries! I can say it was a baptism by fire and apart from the technical issues with the phone lines, it was a joyous evening.

The Blues Room Turns 500

The Blues Room has turned 500 and I was happy to be at the party! Nate Taiapa deserves high praise for this achievement. The following is from his most excellent blog: The Blues Room.

Well here it is Bluesville! Episode 500! Its only taken about 10 years to get here but here we are and what a great time we've had along the way. Joining me in The Blues Room for the 500th episode were The Swamp Dogz featuring John Maydon (gtr, vocs), Mark Kneebone (bass, bk-vocs), Paul Alderton (drums, bk-vocs), & Clara Lange (viol in, vocs) were our backing band. We had special guests Darcy Perry and Max Mac Donald join us too, and Kev from the Eastside was my right hand man on the DJ duties. We played classic blues vinyl courtesy of Ivan of Nivara Lounge and extended our one hour show to two hours. 

We set up the band in the foyer of the station and broadcast the show live to air, you'll see this in some of the video clips included here. We had Derek Jacombs and Graham Clark call in congratulations and others sent in prerecorded congratulations from around the globe.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank Free FM's manager, Phil Grey, for all hes done to support The Blues Room over the years, hes been so generous and accommodating and we couldn't have gotten here without him. All the staff at Free FM for all their support and hard work. To all the guests who have come into the studio or on air from around the globe, thank you!
